Arthur Douglas Ward lives and writes in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Tufts University with a degree in English and minor concentrations in drama and Classics, after which he completed a Ph. D. in English at U.C. Berkeley.
Since well before college, Arthur has been interested in ancient history, especially military history, and martial arts. He started practicing judo at age 13, was captain of the Tufts University karate team under Shihan Kazumi Tabata, and later earned black belts in judo and aikido. He enjoyed a rare opportunity to further his aikido training in Japan for two years under Shihan Morihiro Saito.
After just a semester of teaching English and aikido at the College Preparatory School in Oakland, California, he knew that high school teaching was his destiny and passion. After eight years of teaching at C.P.S., he continued to teach at the Oregon Episcopal School in Portland from 2002 until his retirement in June of 2020.
Besides teaching and martial arts, his longtime interests include reading and writing poetry, fiction, and drama. When he is lucky, he also gets to enjoy working out with his younger daughter Samantha and one day, God willing, with five grandchildren.
In addition to Son of Saul and One More Rose, Arthur’s publications include a memoir of his father called "Missions," two one-act plays, and the short story "The Ghost Lovers" in the online journal Red Branch.
One More Rose will be published as an e-book by Wild Rose Press on June 1, 2022, and another fantasy/romance novel, Dancers in the Circle, will be published later this year.
